Is there a difference between First Aid training and CPR?
Yes. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR training is a very specific training course focusing on what to do in the event of a “cardiac arrest emergency.” It is a valuable technique that can be used during many emergencies including heart attack, or near-drowning when a person has stopped breathing or the heartbeat has stopped.
CPR training is a useful skill to have. Here are some reasons to get trained in CPR. According to the American Heart Association:
- More than 380,000 out-of-hospital sudden heart attacks happen every year
- Nearly 9 out of 10 heart attacks take place at home
- Heart attack sufferers often seem healthy and show no apparent risk factors
- Immediate action is crucial to improve chances of survival
First Aid training, compared to CPR, is a more generalized course that teaches procedures for a number of situations including:
- Snakebite
- Burns
- Stroke
- Control of bleeding
- Care for injuries and wounds
- Emergency treatment of life-threatening situations like poisoning and choking
